U.S. Hospitals Urge Trump to Exempt Medical Supplies and Pharmaceuticals from New Tariffs

The American Hospital Association (AHA) has requested President Trump to exempt medical devices and pharmaceuticals from tariffs on imports from China, Mexico, and Canada12.

Trump has imposed a 10% tariff on goods from China and threatened 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico, though implementation for the latter two has been delayed16.

China is a major supplier of cancer drugs, protective gear, and raw materials for pharmaceutical production, including nearly 30% of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) used in the U.S.12.

Hospitals warn that tariffs could lead to drug shortages, increased healthcare costs, and potential risks to patient safety13.

The U.S. healthcare system heavily relies on international sources for many drugs and medical devices, despite efforts to build domestic supply chains23.

Medical industry groups, including AdvaMed, are also pushing for exemptions, citing concerns about supply chain disruptions and impacts on R&D and innovation45.

Hospitals are particularly concerned about products already in short supply and those for which China, Mexico, and Canada are significant suppliers to the U.S. market23.

The AHA emphasizes that even temporary disruptions in access to critical medications could put patients at significant risk of harm, including death12.

China is a major source of protective equipment for healthcare workers, including N95 respirators, gloves, and face masks13.

The tariffs are part of Trump's strategy to address illegal immigration and the flow of drugs, including fentanyl, into the United States6.
