FDA names Tracy Beth Heg as acting CDER chief

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has appointed Tracy Beth Heg as the acting director of the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research (CDER), the agency’s main drug oversight division.1

CDER is responsible for evaluating the safety and effectiveness of human drugs before and after they reach the U.S. market, so the acting chief role is central to federal drug regulation.1

Heg previously gained prominence for work related to the investigation and analysis of safety data associated with Covid-19 vaccination, experience that is seen as relevant to CDER’s post‑pandemic oversight priorities.1

Her appointment as acting CDER chief follows a leadership transition at the center, with the FDA opting for interim leadership while it determines longer‑term plans for the position.1

The move signals continued emphasis on vaccine and drug safety surveillance, real‑world evidence, and post‑market monitoring within the FDA’s human drug program.1
