Genentech Lays Off 143 Employees as Part of Ongoing Cuts by Roche in Bay Area
Genentech, owned by Roche and headquartered in South San Francisco, is laying off 143 workers as part of its third round of layoffs since April 2024124.
These layoffs impact a wide range of roles including engineers, analysts, directors, AI and machine learning specialists, social media, facilities, and clinical supply staff12.
The layoffs were disclosed in a May 29, 2025 WARN filing, and are expected to be permanent1.
Genentech spokesperson stated these cuts are part of 'strategic workforce planning,' not just cost-cutting measures1.
This brings the total recent layoffs by Genentech to 436 in April 2024, 93 in August 2024, and now 143 in June 202515.
The biotech industry in the Bay Area is seeing a broader trend of layoffs, with over 1,100 jobs cut by various employers in 2025 alone3.
Roche, Genentech’s parent company, reported a $16 billion profit last year despite the ongoing layoffs1.
