Astellas Gene Therapies to Close South San Francisco Manufacturing Facility
Astellas Gene Therapies is closing its gene therapy manufacturing facility in South San Francisco by the end of 2024.
The closure is part of a series of job cuts, with the second wave affecting 10 positions, including quality control analysts and a supply planner manager, effective mid-August.
The facility, originally converted by Audentes Therapeutics in 2016, was acquired by Astellas in 2020 for $3 billion.
Despite the closure, Astellas has opened a new $90 million West Coast Innovation Center in South San Francisco, which will serve as a central location for its West Coast operations.
The new innovation center is a 154,000-square-foot lab and office facility that will house various Astellas business units, including Astellas Gene Therapies, Xyphos Biosciences, and business development teams.
